Fantasy Football: Late Bloomers
Posted on 28 November 2009 by Wanna Be Sports Guy
With many of our trading deadlines come and gone, you’ll find yourself scouring the waiver wires for decent help as the playoffs approach. Nestled among the castoffs and injured fantasy studs you’ll find a few intriguing deals to be had.
Here are two players who have a great chance to make a late-season rise from the refuse bin.
Joe Flacco (QB, Ravens)
Joe Cool has had a rough time of it in his sophomore season. But despite falling short of some of the pre-season hype ladled on him like leftover gravy, he’s been a decent performer. If you’re desperate for some respectable fantasy totals from your signal caller, you could do a lot worse than Flacco, specifically because of his schedule. Look down the list and you’ll see Detroit, Chicago, and Oakland. Unfortunately, you’ll also see the Packers and the Steelers (twice). I wouldn’t recommend starting him against Green Bay (though two of their biggest players on defense were recently lost for the season), let alone trotting him out against Pittsburgh. But against the woeful Lions, Raiders, and Bears (Oh my), he should be a cinch for 180+yards and at least one TD.
Marcedes Lewis (TE, Jaguars)
Owned in only 10% of all ESPN leagues, Lewis could be an effective spot starter for you as the clock winds down on the ‘09 fantasy season. He may see an increase in targets as the Jags (6-4) will need to get creative while they make their playoff push against some pretty stiff competition. This would be a smart strategy for Jacksonville, allowing them to keep featured back Maurice Jones-Drew fresh for the postseason. With Houston, Miami, and Cleveland on the schedule, Lewis could emerge as a decent option in deep fantasy leagues.
That’s all for today, kiddies. Check back in after Week 12 for more hot tips.
