Greatest NHL nickname: Bernie “Boom Boom” Geoffrion

Can there be a better nickname for a hockey star than “Boom Boom?” Bernie Geoffrion was named Boom Boom because he invent the hard and fast slap shot, that would make one “Boom” sound when it left his stick, and then a second “Boom” sound when it hit the boards. Geoffrion was the NHL Rookie of the Year in 1951 and league MVP in 1955 while a member of the Montreal Canadians. While playing for the Montreal Canadians, they won six Stanley Cups, including a record five in a row. Boom Boom was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1972.
One of Geoffrion’s greatest accomplishments occurred during the 1960-’61 season, when he racked up 95 points in 64 games. That total included 50 goals, which made Geoffrion only the second player ever to record 50 goals in a season. This is ironic because Geoffrion was never really known as a huge point-scorer.
