LA Strings =/ LA Lakers
Posted on 19 November 2009 by Wanna Be Sports Guy
Jerry Buss majored in chemistry, but he was definitely not a nerd. After investing in a few properties and divorcing his wife, he bought the LA Strings of World Team Tennis. The LA Strings didn’t attain the success of the LA Lakers and eventually the team flopped. While searching for another sports team, Buss became friends with Jack Kent Cooke, owner of the Los Angeles Lakers and the Washington Redskins. In a few years, Jack Kent Cooke and Jerry Buss would make one of the largest sports deals in history. In the deal, Buss would get the Lakers, Kings, the Great Western Forum and Cooke’s 13,000 acre Raljon Ranch in the Sierras. Cooke would in return get Buss’s Chrysler Building in New York and other properties in three states.
