Let’s go Bowling: College Football Version
Posted on 19 December 2009 by Wanna Be Sports Guy
Before all of the hoopla/stress/last minute shopping of the Christmas holiday envelops us all, I wanted to give my fearless College Football bowl predictions. First, let’s state clearly, that I’m not responsible for all of the money wagered on these predictions (not that anyone would bet on a college football game, right? I’m looking at you Dad) but these should help with your decision making. We are only looking at the Big Bowl games here. I hate to call them the BCS bowls, because I’m fully in favor of changing from the BCS to a college play-off system. Just think of the NCAA’s March Madness only with 64 college football teams. Don’t you think this will inject the sport with a little more excitement before the NFL playoffs start? Even the smaller teams would still have a chance for an upset. I’m not trying to slight any college fans whose teams are playing in the smaller bowls, but unfortunately, they don’t really matter except to alumni or those who are dropping coin on the point spreads. On to the picks:
AT&T Cotton Bowl
Oklahoma State vs. Ole Miss: Winner Oklahoma State: The Cowboys would have been BCS bound if not for WR Dez Bryant’s suspension…Cowboy QB Zac “guyliner” Robinson will be too much for the Rebels on the ground and in the air. Only take the Cowboys to win by a small margin. OK State by 3.
Allstate Sugar Bowl
Cincinnati vs. Florida: Winner Florida: Undefeated Cincinnati has been a real surprise this year behind stud QB Tony Pike, but the loss the Gators took from Alabama will stoke their fire and this one might not be close. QB Tim Tebow will be playing his last collegiate game and will be the difference in this one. Florida by 7.
Tostitos Fiesta Bowl
Boise State vs. TCU: Winner TCU: A match of undefeated teams (who met in the Poinsettia Bowl last year…TCU won), this one should be the most entertaining bowl game this year. The Horned Frogs are one of the most balanced teams in the country that nobody really knows about. Boise State cemented its big-game reputation by beating Oklahoma in a bowl two years ago. This one will be close but TCU will prevail. TCU by 3.
FedEx Orange Bowl
Iowa vs. Georgia Tech: Winner Georgia Tech: Tech features a three headed option offense that is one of the hardest to stop in the country (Nesbitt, Dwyer and Allen) something that Iowa never faced in the Big Ten. While the Hawkeyes were a surprise this season the injuries started to mount at the end of the year and will be a factor here. Georgia Tech by 7 sounds good.
Rose Bowl Game presented by Citi
Ohio State vs. Oregon: Winner Oregon: QB’s will be the main feature in this game because you have two of the best dual threats in college football. Oregon’s QB Jeremiah Masoli can beat you with his legs as well as his strong arm downfield, and OSU’s QB Terrell Pryor is better on the ground game than thru the air which will be the deciding factor. Oregon has been on a roll and will win by at least 3 points.
Citi BCS National Championship Game
Texas vs. Alabama: Winner Alabama: This should be a great game with two teams pretty evenly matched up on both sides of the ball. Heisman Trophy winner RB Mark Ingram is an instant impact player on offense and special teams. Texas coach Mack Brown will game-plan for him, but Ingram will still make a major difference. Texas QB Colt McCoy will be playing his last college football game prior to leaving for the NFL and will need to have a big game both passing and rushing to keep the pressure on Alabama’s Defense. Will Bama have a letdown after beating Florida in the SEC Championship? I don’t think so….Alabama by at least 5.
If you disagree, then let me know and prove your point, otherwise I will see you in line at the nearest Sports-book.
