Phil Jackson made a statement recently, that women shouldn’t be allowed to compete in the NBA. When Jackson was coaching a youth basketball camp early in his coaching career, he noticed a big difference in skill level when he set up a match that pitted a state champion high school girls team against a group of middle school boys that never played together. The game turned out to one-sided in favor of the boys’ team, and it stuck in Jackson’s mind forever.

The topic of women playing in the NBA was raised in a recent article in Sports Illustrated. Since then, NBA Commissioner David Stern said that the possibility of women joining and playing in the NBA is very likely to happen in the next 10 years.

When asked about Stern’s comment about women having a good shot at playing in the NBA in the next ten years, LaBron James said, “Ten Years? That’s like right around the corner. I’ll be 34 and I’ll still be in the NBA. I think ten years is a little pushing it. I love all sports. I love watching the girls, especially in the Olympics and in the WNBA. They’re great and there are a lot of great players. But ten years, I think that’s pushing it”.

In my opinion, Stern just said that women could have a chance in the NBA because he didn’t want to annoy women who watch the NBA. I’m not saying that it couldn’t happen, but ten years from now is right around the corner, look at how long it took for women to have a professional league of their own in the United States. I’ve seen many women who can take on any guy on the court and beat them. Hopefully that day will happen and I would love to see it.
