Comeback Trail: Return of the Sheeter
Posted on 27 January 2010 by Wanna Be Sports Guy
Anyone who has been keeping an eye on the MLB hot stove has heard the news by now – The Oakland A’s have taken a startling leap of faith and signed former Milwaukee Brewers ace Ben Sheets for an estimated $10 million.
Why should you care? Because, my WannaBe Brethren, this could be the start of one of the most interesting stories to kick start the 2010 season.
For those of you unfamiliar with Big Ben, let me sum him up in three words: Dominant, dominant, and often-injured. He’s an Olympic Gold Medalist, a former All-Star starter, and a co-holder of the single-game strikeout record.
So here’s what every MLB fan should be aware of – When healthy, the Sheeter is one of the most intimidating pitchers in the game. I’ll never forget the day when his overpowering curveball KO-ed 19 Atlanta Braves. It was one of the greatest single-game pitching performances in the history of the game. But for as great as Big Ben was on the hill, most Milwaukee fans will remember him for his lengthy stints on the DL. After a questionable series of exchanges that led to his departure from the Brew Crew, Sheets was all set to sign a deal with Mike Maddux and the Texas Rangers.
That is, until Benny failed his physical. That was prior to the 2009 season, which resulted in the big man from Louisiana taking a year off from the game to rehab his injured elbow.
Purported to be 100% healthy, Sheeter is ready to play for the first time out of a Brewers uniform. His heartbreaking curveball, decent change up, and 98-mph heater give him all the tools he’ll need to succeed. So, this will either be a steal for Billy Beane, or a total bust.
One thing’s for sure – It’ll be fun to watch.
