Remembering the very first Summer Slam: Mega Powers vs. Mega Bucks

Posted on 20 January 2010 by Wanna Be Sports Guy

When I was a kid, I loved wrestling. In 1988 practically begged my dad to purchase the very first Summer Slam. My dad eventually said no, and I went in my room in tears. I was only 8, what else was I suppose to do when your hopes and dreams of seeing your favorite wrestler dashes away like a puppy with a new treat in his mouth? However, my friend’s dad ordered it for him and I was fortunate enough to witness history in the making.

This classic main event of the first ever SummerSlam was dubbed The Mega Powers (Hulk Hogan and Macho Man Randy Savage) vs. The Mega Bucks (“The Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase and Andre the Giant). A match of this magnitude required a special guest referee. The guest referee was the future WWE Hall of Famer and Governor of Minnesota, Jesse “The Body” Ventura.

The Mega Powers (Hulk Hogan and Macho Man Randy Savage) started out with the early advantage, making quick tags and keeping The Million Dollar Man on their side of the ring. However, once Andre the Giant came in, Hogan and Savage’s fortunes began to change. Andre the Giant’s brute force was almost too much for the Mega Powers to handle. The Mega Powers made a comeback, but once again found themselves down, and almost out. Then, when a loss seemed imminent, Elizabeth got on the ring apron and took off her skirt, revealing bikini bottoms in one of the most famous moments in SummerSlam history. DiBiase and Andre the Giant were both taken aback by her beauty that Hogan and Savage time to recover. Hogan slammed The Million Dollar Man, Savage nailed his top-rope elbow drop and Hogan hit the leg drop. Ventura had no choice but to count the 1-2-3 no matter how badly he didn’t want to. It was a great match, and one that I will never forget.

Don’t ya just love wrestling?
