Teams with Something to Prove

Posted on 02 January 2010 by Wanna Be Sports Guy

It’s put up or shut up time in the NFL, and that’s gotten me thinking about some of the other franchises across the sporting world. The plights of such a team as, say, the Dallas Cowboys (despite their win over the Saints) is not all that dissimilar to those of the Mets and Cavaliers.

MLB: The New York Mets

Despite having one of the top payrolls in the game, the Mets have been a perennial disappointment. Fans of New York’s “other” franchise have been forced to suffer through collapse after collapse, and their seems to be no help in sight. Clint Everts and Elmer Dessens? Way to go on those free agent acquisitions, Omar.

NBA: The Cleveland Cavaliers

Can they win a ring with Lebron? Will the Shaq experiment pay off? Signs point to know, but it’s hard to argue with that kind of talent. My vote is for “No” on the whole O’Neil episode, which has taken a heavy toll on Cleveland’s scoring machine. But if Big Z can manage to keep his minutes up, then they may have a shot at the Finals.

NFL: The Dallas Cowboys

The aforementioned December darlings still have a lot to prove to their fans. Yes, they may make the playoffs. But will they win a playoff game? Signs point to no, but I have to admit that I’m surprised at their win over the Saints. Tony Romo showed his guts, and Miles Austin has continued to emerge as a deep threat. But I still don’t think it’s enough to save Wade Phillips’ job.
