Curing the February Funk
Posted on 08 February 2010 by Wanna Be Sports Guy
Sitting at my desk, staring out at the bleak, gray landscape, I can feel it settling over me like a stifling blanket. It’s that time of year, ladies and gentlemen. Lock your doors and grab some intoxicants – The February Funk is upon us.
This column, my WannaBe Brethren, is a preemptive strike against the forces of depression that will fill your soul following Sunday’s big game. Don’t be alarmed when it happens. It’s inevitable, something as constant as the turn from autumn to winter. America’s two major sports will each be in their off-seasons, leaving many of us with no outlet for our athletic desires.
But fear not; I’m here to help. While you may be cooped up indoors, there are a few things you can do to pass the time and remain in good cheer. Take a look!
Move the TV next to the treadmill.
…or whatever other exercise equipment you have in the house. Watch your favorite sports movies or the NFL or MLB networks while jogging for a mile or so, or maybe while pumping a little iron. 15 minutes per day will yield results almost before you know it, and you’ll be in better cheering shape once new season starts!
Cook something!
As long as you’re being healthy with a little exercise, maybe it’s time to take up cooking. It’s a great way to augment your brief workouts. Buy a steamer, and cook up some black beans and rice. Maybe saute some chicken with a little olive oil, fresh garlic and unsalted tomato sauce. It’ll be delicious, and much better for you than ordering out. Trust me – it almost always tastes better when you make it yourself.
Read a book!
You heard me. Pick up an autobiography from your favorite sports star, or maybe a history of your favorite team. I guarantee that once you start reading, you’ll be hooked. Then you can impress your friends with little bits of trivia once the seasons gets into gear.
These are just a few ideas. I’m not the world’s biggest health nut, but I do know that all of these methods have worked for me. If you stick to them, these tried and true tips will keep your spirit strong throughout the February Funk!
