Foreverman: Will Brett be Back?

Posted on 01 February 2010 by Wanna Be Sports Guy

Well, the dream is over.

Once again, a Brett Favre helmed team has come up just short of the Superbowl. That makes two overtime losses in three years.

But the question that should be on everyone’s mind is this: Will he take another shot?

It’s certainly possible. Brett enjoyed one of his better statistical seasons in 2009. He defied the critics (including yours truly), showing almost no fatigue down the final stretch. Opinions vary wildly in this debate. Some say he should step down once and for all, while others declare that Number 4 is simply too good to retire right now.

With all of the NFC North action over, we have a little clearer picture of what the division will look like next season. Cutler and the Bears? I’m sure they’ll find some way to pump up their fans before the 2010 campaign – something akin to “OK guys, 2009 was just practice. Now we’re serious!”

But they’ll be disappointing again. The Lions will continue to improve, but they’re not really a playoff threat. The Packers will benefit from an additional year of experience, and emerge as an even bigger contender. They had the youngest roster in the NFL last season, and a little added maturity will make them all the more dangerous.

And the Vikes? Well, without a good quarterback, they’ll be right back where they were before Brett.

Personally, my money says that man from Mississippi will wait from until after the 2010 Draft before making his decision. If Minnesota adds another playmaking receiver (a la Percy Harvin), I don’t think he’ll be able to resist one more run.

Let’s take a moment to examine Favre’s goals for this past season.

#1: Defy expectations and raise hell throughout the NFL world. Check.

#2:Beat the Green Bay Packers (and Ted Thompson). Double check.

#3: Make the Playoffs. Check.

#4: Win the Superbowl.

Ooooh, so close.

So, three out of four isn’t bad. But it just isn’t Number Four.
