The Camera Makes It Boring
Posted on 15 February 2010 by Wanna Be Sports Guy
There are certain things that you just have to do yourself. Such is the motto I’ve lived by, and it’s provided me with some interesting experiences in my lifetime.
But for those days when you’re cooped up inside, it’s nice to see other people having a good time with a little friendly (or sometimes not so friendly) competition. There are certain sports such as football, basketball, and baseball that can still provide decent entertainment, even when experienced vicariously. But for each one that translates will into the medium of moving pictures, there are others that simply defy television’s ability to capture excitement.
So, here are some sports that, while they do appear on TV, should be experienced in person rather than on the screen.
Golf
Please. How much more boring can you get? I would rather watch people play poker on TV. It’s a great time when you’re out doing it yourself. But it’s just not conducive to good television.
Paintball
Playing paintball is, unquestionably, some of the most fun you can have without breaking the law. Getting together with a group of friends and plastering each other with paint is always a good time. But on television, all you see is men and women hiding behind giant inflatable barriers that look like they were stolen from the air-jump at Chuck E. Cheese. Don’t let the ol’ idiot box ruin it for you – get out and play!
Fishing
This is one of my favorite pastimes, bar none. I love being out on the water, or reclining against a tree next to a lake. It’s one of the most serene, relaxing experiences known to man. But on television, all of the enjoyment comes through as flat, with the cheesy editing and music taking all the fun out of it. This isn’t something that should be experienced vicariously. The only thing that saves this from being the worst on the list is the sometimes-cool underwater camera shots.
Bowling
This is, without a doubt, the worst sport to watch on television. It’s definitely a great time when you’re with a bunch of buddies. But I don’t care how many awesome camera angles the producers think they’ve come up with. It’s still bowling, and bowling on TV will always suck.
