The Worst Teams in Pro Sports #1: The Chicago Cubs

02.06.10 | Comment?

Baseball season is rapidly approaching, and my blood has begun to boil. The anticipation of the coming struggle is almost too much to take. I check my favorite club’s news blog five times a day, minimum, scouring the news wire for any and all info involving my club. I’m one of those fans who upon waking up in the morning immediately asks, “Who’s pitching for my team today?”

Sound obsessive? Maybe. I prefer to think of myself as “passionate.” But whatever you call it, it’s about to get worse.

With the aforementioned anticipation comes another feeling – a loathsome, hateful disdain which sets the bile rising in my throat. I’ve checked the schedule, marking the day on my calender like some modern-day prophet of doom.

It’s the day the Chicago Cubs, the worst franchise in the history of pro sports, comes to town.

“How can you hate the Cubbies,” so many ask me. Seconds later, after they’ve picked themselves up off the floor, I give them my answer.

They have not won a World Series title since 1908, and yet they continue to act as though they’re the cream of the MLB crop. Every season, I have to endure cries of “This could be the year for the Cubs!”

Yes, it could. And Arnold Schwarzenegger could suddenly sprout a rainbow unicorn horn and run around California handing out dandelions and shaving cream to the homeless.

But those are all matters of personal taste. Here’s what really rankles me about the “loveable” losers.

Wrigley Field is a hole, plain and simple. It’s a dilapidated, outdated mess. And yet, the Chicago populace will not tolerate the building of a new stadium. “It’s a shrine,” they say, “a monument to the history of the franchise.”

And they’re right. It is a monument… to 100 years of losing.

And don’t count on their fortunes changing any time soon. They’ve lost some key pieces this off-season, and have failed to make a major splash in the free agent market. In fact, their highest-profile deal came in the offloading of Milton Bradley.

I’ll close with this simple prediction: The Chicago Cubs will never win a World Series whilst hailing from the “friendly confines” of Wrigley.

And that’s all I have to say about that.
