First Subway Series: New York Yankees vs New York Giants
Posted on 15 June 2010 by Wanna Be Sports Guy
From the moment the Yankees were born, New York fans yearned to see them play the Giants. In 1910, unable to resist a certain financial downfall, John Brush of the Giants and Frank Farrell of the Yankees decided not to wait for a pennant run to play each other. After both clubs finished second, the two owners agreed to hold a best-of-seven postseason series to determine the champion of New York.
There was more at stake than just bragging rights. Players on the winning team would receive 60% of ticket sales of the first four games, a bonus that would amount to at least $1,000 each. Because both teams hated finishing second, the winner could vindicate an otherwise disappointing season.
The match up was a classic battle. Hal Chase and the Yankees were ready to take on Christy Mathewson of the Giants. The Series went back and forth until the Giants took a 3-2 lead when they beat the Yankees in game 5 with a score of 10-2.
The Giants knew they needed one more victory to take the series and knew the Yankees weren’t going to be able to beat Mathewson. For the third time Mathewson beat the Yankees, this time by the score of 6-3 and won the series 4-2. Manhattan belonged to the Giants.
