Kurt Warner’s First things First Foundation

Posted on 29 June 2010 by Wanna Be Sports Guy

When one thinks about the St. Louis Rams or the Arizona Cardinals for that matter, we tend to think about one of the greatest quarterbacks of all-time and that’s Kurt Warner. Warner’s journey to the NFL is one like no other. He began his playing career at Regis High school in Cedar Rapids, Iowa where he earned a scholarship to the University of Iowa. After his senior year, he was named Gateway’s Conference Player of the Year but he did not get drafted into the NFL.

In 1994 Warner got an invitation to try out for the Green Bay packers but was cut from the roster. Warner wanted to play football but had to make some money to support himself, so he stocked shelves at a local grocery store in Iowa. After a few more tryouts with various teams in the NFL, Warner was finally awarded a contract to play for the St. Louis Rams in 1999. That was the start of a Hall of Fame career.

When an injury by Rams starting quarterback Trent Green went down with an injury, Warner took over and led them to Super Bowl XXXIV where they beat the Tennessee Titans 16-10 and Warner was named the MVP. When Warner left St. Louis in 2003, he had a brief stint with the New York Giants before making his way to Arizona where he would lead the Cardinals to Super Bowl XLIII where they would lose to the Steelers 27-23.

When Warner retired in 2009, his legacy as a football player will remain at the top, but it’s his off field that he makes the biggest difference. After Warner’s Super Bowl victory, he and his wife started the First Things First Family Foundation. The First Things First Family Foundation is dedicated to impacting the lives of children and low-income families. Warner’s foundation hosts several events such as the “Ice Cream for Breakfast”, the First Things First Golf Classic, and the Night With Champions.

Every project Kurt Warner’s foundation sponsors are centered around his family’s theme of putting faith and family first.

It is great to see former athletes making a difference!
