Babe Ruth: tummy troubles

Babe Ruth played his baseball career with three teams, The Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees and the Boston Braves. But he’s most famous for playing in New York where his antics were legendary. The Yankees depended on Ruth to help carry the load and when he was injured it messed the team up in so many ways.

In 1925 Ruth suffered from too much eating and had to sit out for a while. What was the name of his stomach ache?

A. Stomach ache of the century
B. The Great Stomach ache
C. The Stomach ache heard around the world

The answer is C. In the spring of 1925 Ruth had to undergo stomach surgery because of an intestinal abscess that was brought on by too much drinking and eating. In Spring Training Babe Ruth was overweight and worn down and suffered an intestinal abscess. Ruth’s bad health was largely caused by his bad habits. Before surgery, the Yankees Manager repeatedly told Ruth to clean up his act. After Ruth’s surgery, Huggins suspended him for insubornation and Ruth was forced to play only 98 games. The Yankees finished 7th place that season.

Babe Ruth is one of the most recognizable men in sports history and his times with the Yankees were legendary. When the Yankees played against the Chicago Cubs in the 1932 World Series he was being heckled by fans who called him all kinds of nasty names. Ruth decided to show the players and fans in Chicago how great of a player he was when he pointed to the spot were he hit his last home run in the World Series of his career. The hone run would go on to be called Ruth’s “Called Shot”.
