James Toney vs Dave Tiberi

James “Lights Out” Toney was one of the best boxers in the 1990s. Dave “The Uncrowned Champion” Tiberi was an unheralded boxer from Delaware. During their first and only match, Dave was the underdog. Fans and bookies alike, thought James would teach Dave a lesson he would never forget. Nothing was far from the truth. Dave Tiberi pounded James Toney on the ropes. Fans, spectators, and both boxers corners thought Dave Tiberi had won the match. But the match was awarded to James Toney.

One judge scored 117-111 for Tiberi. Another judge scored 115-112 Toney. The third judge scored 115-111 for Toney. ABC boxing analyst Alex Wallau couldn’t believe the verdict. When asked about the crown, Wallau said “a couple of incompetent people at the ringside robbed him of that”. Donald Trump who owned the casino where the fight took place, called it the worst result he had ever seen. Senator William Roth of Delaware was so incensed that he spearheaded a U.S. Senate investigation of the sport of boxing.

Tiberi never fought again.
