Dick “Night train” Lane was an undrafted military veteran when he tried out for the Los Angeles Rams in 1952. Dick Lane is known as one of the most ferocious cornerbacks who ever donned a Rams uniform. Dick Lane acquired his nickname from Buddy Morrow’s hit record “Night Train”. Buddy Morrow’s “Night Train” record was played frequently in the Rams locker room by teammate Tom Fears.
During his rookie season, Dick “Night train” Lane set an NFL record with 14 interceptions during a 12 game season. His record remained untouched for more than half a century. Dick “Night train” Lane played in 7 Pro Bowls and finished with 68 career interceptions and 5 touchdowns. The NFL banished the clothesline tackle because of the raw playing of Dick “Night train” Lane.
Dick “Night train” Lane was one of our military’s finest.
