David Stern: Arrogance and the NBA 2010 Draft
Posted on 14 July 2010 by Wanna Be Sports Guy
Nobody really expected the 2010 NBA Draft to exciting, and that after the first 10 names were called, the draft suddenly took a turn into boredom. But what really took me by surprise was how arrogant David Stern was when coming to the podium to announce the draft picks. I remember a few times when Stern walked up to the podium and actually made a few comments “listen to this” and said it with a smirk, as if to say, what a dumb draft pick.
After the first 10 picks Stern looked like he didn’t want to be there. I remember seeing him shake is head a few times as he looked down at his paper to read the next player to be drafted. Not only did he look uncomfortable when the New York area fans booed him, relentlessly, he called them unruly, classic David Stern right?
Maybe Stern is tired of being the NBA Draft’s Master of Ceremonies, or maybe the constant boos from the New York crowd is getting to his head. Whatever the case was last night, Stern clearly was full of himself. Stern degraded the fans, who by the way were just having fun and when Greivis Vasquez was drafted by Memphis and hugged the commissioner, Stern looked awkward and puzzled that a player actually liked him. I think Stern is a good commissioner but at the 2010 draft, he looked more like someone hired to do a job he didn’t like and therefore took it out on the fans and players. Maybe next time the Draft can be held in Los Angeles and Chris Rock can announce the picks, at least he’ll keep the crowd laughing instead of booing.
