New York’s biggest thief

Posted on 20 July 2010 by Wanna Be Sports Guy

The New York Yankees have always been known for their hitting and pitching. With legendary and Hall of Fame players like Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, Reggie Jackson, Alex Rodriguez, Whitey Ford, Bob Turley, Ron Guidry, Roger Clemens and Mariano Rivera, important baseball records, like the number of stolen bases are often forgotten.

Who is the Yankee all-time leading stolen base leader?

A. Phil Rizzuto
B. Mickey Rivers
C. Rickey Henderson
D. Derek Jeter

The answer is C. Rickey Henderson. Henderson led the league in stolen bases 4-times for the Bronx Bombers and is their all-time leader in stolen bases with 337 thefts.

Rickey played for the Yankees for five years. Unfortunately, he had the disadvantage of playing on a Yankee team during the downfall of their franchise. During his time in pinstripes, he led the league in stolen bases 4-times and in 1988 he stole a Yankee record 93 bases. In 1986 he led the league in stolen bases and hit in runs with 130.

The only year in which RIckey Henderson did not lead the Yankees in stolen bases was in 1987. During the 1987 baseball season, Lou Pinella thought Henderson did not play with a high intensity and wanted to trade him. 1987 was Henderson’s only year in his career in which he did not steal 50 bases or more. In 1991, Henderson became MLB’s all-time leader in steals.
