Strange Team Names: Providence Steam Rollers

The Providence Steam Rollers played in the NFL from 1925 to 1931. The Steam Rollers played their games in a stadium built for bicycle races. Prior to joining the NFL, the Steam Rollers were a successful independent football team. As an independent team, the Steam Rollers earned their fair share of controversy. Several college football players played for the Steam Rollers, but under aliases as to not jeopardize their amateur status.

The Steam Rollers were the first New England team to win an NFL Championship. They won the Championship in 1928. In 1929, Steam Roller was one of the first teams to play an NFL game under the floodlights. This historic night game was played at Kinsley Park. However, they got “Steam Rolled” by the Chicago Cardinals 16-0.
