World Series 8 game winner takes all

Posted on 22 July 2010 by Wanna Be Sports Guy

The World Series as we know it has always been a seven-game series but that wasn’t always the case. The first format of the World Series was two teams playing in an 8-game winner takes all series. The first series to go 8-games was during the first ever World Series between the Boston Red Sox and the Pittsburgh Pirates. What two teams played in the last series to go 8-games?

A. Philadelphia A’s vs. Chicago Cubs 1910
B. New York Yankees vs. Brooklyn Dodgers 1941
C. New York Giants vs. New York Yankees 1921
D. Cincinnati Reds vs. Chicago White Sox 1919

The answer is C. The New York Yankees and the New York Giants began their cross-town rivalry in 1921 and were the last two teams to play a series that went the full 8-games. The Giants won the series and their second championship under manager John McGraw.

The first ever “Subway Series” demonstrated that the New York Giants postseason bad luck had come to an end, as the NL champs overcame a 2-0 deficit to win in eight games. The Giants were helped by Babe Ruth’s injury that kept him out of action for games seven and eight, which were won by the Giants 2- and 1-0.

Yankee pitcher Waite Hoyt had two wins and a prefect ERA in three starts, but lost the series last game 1-0. Irish Meusel of the Giants was the series star as he got ten hits and collected seven RBIs.
