Yankees: Murderers Row
Posted on 21 July 2010 by Wanna Be Sports Guy
The Yankees have won more championships than any sports franchise in America. The greatest Yankee team of all-time was the 1927 Yankees nicknamed “Murderers Row”. However, there was another famous Yankee team called “Murderers Row” what Yankee team was dubbed that nickname?
A. 1926 Yankees
B. 1961 Yankees
C. 1977 Yankees
D. 2000 Yankees
E. 2007 Yankees
The answer is the B the 1961 Yankees. The 1961 Yankees won the World Series behind the awesome display of power led by Roger Maris who hit 61 home runs and Mickey Mantle who hit 54. Yogi Berra, Elston Howard, Tony Kubek and Johnny Blanchard all hit over 20 home runs to give them the name “Murderers Row”. The Yankees had great pitching also as Whitey Ford led the league in wins with 25 and screwball reliever Luis Arroyo won 15 games and saved a league-leading 29 for New York.
The arms of the Yankees opponents in the World Series, the Cincinnati Reds couldn’t stave off the latest edition of Murderers Row as Ford’s shutout in game four broke Ruth’s 29 2/3 consecutive scoreless-innings record in series play. New York won the World Series convincingly despite the fact that New York’s two hardest hitters drove in just two runs between them for the entire series.
