Dodgers defeat Expos 1-0 after 22 innings of baseball

Posted on 23 August 2010 by Wanna Be Sports Guy

On this date in 1989, the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Montreal Expos 1 to zip in 22 innings. Rick Dempsey hit a homerun in the 22nd inning to give the boys in blue the win.

The engine of this epic battle was the pitching staff of both teams. The Los Angeles pitchers were: Orel Hershiser (7 innings), Jay Howell (2 innings), Alejandro Pena (4 innings), Tim Crews (3 innings), and John Wetteland (6 innings). The five pitchers combined for 13 hits, 6 walks, and 18 strike outs. The Montreal Expos pitchers were: Pascual Perez (8 innings), Tim Burke (2 innings), Bryn Smith (2 innings), Zane Smith (2 innings), Rich Thompson (6 innings), and Dennis Martinez (2 innings).

During the game, the Expos’ mascot Youppi! provided comic relief. He was ejected by the umpires in the 11th inning for dancing on top of the Dodger Dugout. Youppi! was allowed to return if he agreed to stay in the Expos dugout. Youppi! put on a pair of pajamas in the 13th inning and pretended to go to sleep on top of the Expos dugout. No wonder Youppi! was tired, the epic game lasted over six hours and ended close to 2:00 a.m.
