Ever wonder who named a team and why they gave it it’s name? I’ve listed a few of my favorite football teams. Dig in!
Kansas City Chiefs
Dalles Texans owner Lamar Hunt relocated to Kansas City and renamed the team the “Kansas City Chiefs” after Kansas City Mayor H. Roe “Chief” Bartle promised to enlarge the city’s stadium and guarantee high season ticket sales.
Houston Texans
The Dallas Texans were one of the original AFL teams. The Dallas Texans moved to Kansas City in 1963. When Houston got an expansion team in 2002, they revived the name
Pittsburgh Steelers
The Pittsburgh Steelers were originally named the Pittsburgh Pirates. They were named after Pittsburgh’s MLB baseball team. In 1940, owner Al Rooney renamed the team after the city’s steel industry.
Baltimore Ravens
Baltimore was once the home of poet Edgar Allen Poe, author of “The Raven”. The name Baltimore Ravens was selected by fans via a telephone poll from a list of 100 NFL-approved names.
Indianapolis Colts
The Indianapolis Colts originated as the Baltimore Colts in 1947. The name “Colts” gives a shout out to Baltimore’s long tradition of horse breeding and horse racing.
Atlanta Falcons
in 1965, the new Atlanta team held a contest to name the franchise. Julia Elliott, a teacher in Griffin, Georgia, suggested Falcons: “The falcon is proud and dignified, with great courage and fight. It is deadly and has a great sporting tradition”. Some of the other suggested names for the Atlanta team were the Knights, Bombers, Rebels, Crackers, Thrashers, Lancers, Firebirds, Fireballs and Thunderbirds.
Tennessee Titans
Formerly the Tennessee Oilers, owner Bud Adams renamed the team after the elderly Greek gods called the Titans. Bud Adams thought the name was appropriate because the team played in Nashville, a city nicknamed “The Athens of the South”.
