Madison Square Garden: The Mecca of Basketball

The New York Knickerbockers are one of the most storied franchises in the NBA and Madison Square Garden is one of the most hollowed sports arenas in the nation. So the question is, what year did the New York Knicks play their first game in Madison Square Garden?

A. 1946
B. 1949
C. 1950
D. 1948
E. 1922

The answer is A, 1946. The New York Knicks were part of the BAA and played their first game against the Toronto Huskies at Madison Square Garden. Madison Square Garden is known for many things including big fights. M ichael Jordan called the Madison Square Garden the “Mecca” of basketball.

Fans at Madison Square Garden has had the opportunity to witness some of the greatest players and feats performed in the NBA. On 0ctober 13, 1949 the Knicks played the Minneapolis Lakers and outside on the marquee it read “GEO Mikan vs. Knicks”, instead of MLPS vs. Knicks.

The Knicks have played many memorable games at Madison Square Garden but none comes close to what took place on May 8, 1970 when injured Knick star Willis Reed hobbled out on to court, sending the entire Garden into an uproar as he inspired New York to a win over the L.A. Lakers in the Finals.

Fans at Madison Square Garden got a chance to see one of their own leave with style and grace when they witnessed Patrick Ewing’s number retired in 2003.
