Brothers Bob and Emil Meusel were on opposite sides of the playing field in three consecutive Fall Classics from 1921 to 1923. The oldest brother Emil come out on top the first two games. Bob claimed the third victory. Two other sets of brothers have gone head-to head in the World Series, and the older brother prevailed in those as well. In all, 23 pairs and one trio of brothers have appeared in the Fall Classic.
Doc and Jimmy Johnson were the first brothers to face each other in the World Series. Doc’s Indians beat Jimmy’s Dodgers in 1920. The Alou family is the only family to send three brothers to the Fall Classic. Felipe and Matty Alou played for the 1962 Giants. The youngest brother Jesus Alou played on the A’s championship teams in 1973 and 1974.
Ken and Clete Boyer are the only brothers to hit home runs in the same World Series game. The Boyers both hit home runs in game seven of the 1964 World Series. Ken Boyer’s Cardinals beat Clete’s Yankees. The Coopers where the only pitcher-catcher battery in a World Series. Walker was behind the plate on all six of Mort’s starts. Mort was 2-3 in those games while Walker batted 5 for 21.
The DiMaggio family has combined for the most World Series hits with 61. Although Dominic DiMaggio only contributed to six world series hits while playing for the 1964 Red Sox, his brother Joe chipped in 54 hits in 10 years with the Yankees.
