So you want to be a Bleacher Creature?

I’m a New York Yankee fan and there’s no section at Yankee Stadium that is more popular than the Bleacher Creature’s section in right field. If you’ve never been a Bleacher Creature, your life is incomplete but I”ll share a little Bleacher Creature 101 with you. When the Yankees defense steps on the field during the first inning, the Bleacher Creature fans in right field will call out a name. For instance we’ll use Derek Jeter. The Bleacher Creatures will say “Hey Jeter” and the rest of the fans will shout “Derek Jeter” followed by 5 claps. They’ll keep saying his name until he recognizes them by tipping his hat.

The Bleacher Creature section was founded by Ali Ramirez during the late 1980s when the Yankees were not doing too well. When Ramirez died, the Yankees made a plaque in memory and his Bleacher Creature seat became a memorial that will never be sat in.

One of the most memorable Bleacher Creature moments happened during2002 when former Yankee pitcher, David Cone sat in the right field. His big moment came when he got the chance to start the chanting of the players name. He yelled out “Yo, Bernie” to Bernie Williams and the Bleacher Creature fans followed with the chant of his name. Williams responded by tipping his hat. After Cone’s chant, the Bleacher Creatures in return chanted “We got Cone, we got Cone”.
