Rogers Hornsby waits for spring

Posted on 12 February 2011 by Wanna Be Sports Guy

“People ask me what I do in winter when there’s no baseball. I’ll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring.” Rogers Hornsby

Rogers Hornsby is probably the best right-handed hitter in the history of the game. Hornsby was a faboulous player who captured seven batting titles, that included 6 batting titles in a row. Hornsby played with straight fire and had a hustler’s mentality. Hornsby hit .424 in 1924 which is a National League record. He has a career mark of .359, which is also a National League record. The two-time MVP and triple crown winner was also the St. Louis Cardinals manager when they won their first World Series in 1926. Rogers was also the first National League player to hit 300 home runs.

  1. Peter M. Arel Says:

Hornsby’s travels began in St. Louis because Sam Breadon wouldn’t give Hornsby the contract Hornsby
felt he deserved;from there Hornsby went to the
    New York(later San Francisco)Giants, under John J.
McGraw;while with the Giants he alienated owner
Charles Stoneham and was traded to the Boston Braves,
who were having financial difficulties;from Boston it
was on to Chicago where he played for(and also
managed) the Cubs(who discovered Hornsby had a gambling addiction which surfaced when he was found
to have borrowed money from several teammates);even if Hornsby hadn’t had a gambling addiction the Cubs would
still have found an excuse to be rid of him.
